Project Spade is the Google data center rising on the former Hoette Farms and Nursery site along Interstate 70 in Montgomery County, with related parcels in nearby New Florence. Google is the named end user; Related Digital is the developer. It is one half of a roughly 1,900-acre 'Mega Site' straddling I-70, paired with Amazon's Project Green on the north side. Google's announced investment in Montgomery County has been put at about 15 billion dollars, and the County Commission has approved tax incentives for the project. The two projects have split the community. Residents organized as Preserve Montgomery County and took the county to court, arguing the public was not given adequate notice and questioning whether local water and power systems can support facilities this large. Supporters point to the prospect of major investment and new tax revenue in a rural county. Figures here (about 3.2 million square feet, on the order of 1,200 MW) come from early filings and are not yet confirmed against a final site plan.
