Project Jade is a roughly $50 billion data center and power-plant campus in the Switchgrass Industrial Park about eight miles south of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Laramie County gave unanimous site-plan approval in January 2026 for five buildings drawing about 1.8 gigawatts, paired with up to 2.7 gigawatts of on-site natural-gas generation built by Tallgrass Energy, nearly triple all of Wyoming's current electricity use.

The mystery is who it serves. The campus was announced by Crusoe Energy, the firm that built OpenAI's Stargate site in Abilene, Texas, but Crusoe quietly exited, surfacing only when Bloomberg reported it in June 2026, with Google reportedly pushing it out over cost and timeline. The end tenant has never been publicly named, and no operating shell appears in the filings reviewed so far.

The model is "bring your own power," gas generation built on site to bypass the grid, which Wyoming lawmakers worry will still lean on Black Hills Energy during shortages. Cooling draws from deep wells below the Ogallala aquifer, and Wyoming's lack of a corporate income tax plus equipment sales-tax exemptions make the economics work.
